Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects are the focal point of popular integrated learning systems. However, many are calling out for the “A” in “arts” to turn STEM into STEAM.  At My Village Learning Center, we believe Art is an integral component of STEM as it requires creativity during such processes as engineering, science experimentation or creating prototypes in technology.

This STEAM class will include a variety of hands-on activities that involve cooperative group project based learning with a variety of materials including, but not limited to the Little Bits STEAM curriculum.

The LIttle Bits STEAM curriculum was featured on Ted Talks and is an award-winning platform of easy-to-use electronic building blocks that empower students to invent anything, from their own remote controlled car, to a smart home device. The Bits snap together with magnets, no soldering, no wiring, no programming needed.  Directions are as simple as LEGO directions, so it's just plug and play!

STEAM: Engineering and Architecture: Creating a Haunted House
This lesson on architecture falls on Halloween Day! We are going to have a
spooktackular time planning and building an indoor haunted house that kids
can actually crawl through! But first, students must sketch a floor plan of their
haunted house and consider the structural integrity of their building materials.
Students will also play the role of the designer in order to decorate their section
of the haunted house as spooky as possible with strobe lights, black lights,
monster brains (wet spaghetti), spider webs, green slime, etc. Each child will
have a chance to crawl through the haunted house, while other kids are posted
along the perimeter as zombies reaching in to scare them. Remaining time
during class will be filled with Halloween games and activities.
